Get Digital !

This will be my final blog post for Dice mt100 module for this year.

At this conference we had to present our app idea posters to judges from the various Computing industries, while also attending the Get Digital seminar, which was based entirely on Cloud Computing as Dcu hosts the Centre of Cloud Computing on campus.

Theo Lynn introduced and addressed the audience once again in regards to cloud computing and what dcu strive to achieve in the future. Theo informed the group in this manner as visitors of the university also attend this event.

As Dcu has the National centre of cloud computing on campus which

Helping multi national companies such as Intel while also helping Small indigenous businesses.

Our first speaker was Professor Martin Curely who is the VP of Intel Europe, he talked   about how cloud computing is slowly but surely becoming more common and maybe in a few years time we may put “our life in the cloud”.

He spoke of the changes through computing and the most important aspects were sustainability, digital transformation and mass collaboration. He defined these as the three colliding trends, which will « reshape the future of industry and society »

Intel has a close alliance with other multi nationals such as BMW.Healthcare and energy industries are to be believed to be transformed by the cloud in the near future

Everyone knows that we are becoming a more resourced based society, as we use 3.2 billion of the earths world resources yearly which unfortunately means that there is no “planet b” as such, instead we should make a much more attractable vision of the future realistically.

Moore’s law is continuing is to drive innovation and creativity but using technology. Transformation of music by apple or kindle by Amazon has created a more sustainable environment.

Secondly spoke Constantine he discussed Cloud Computing in regards to its economics. He described it as a platform for disembodied services. Also implying that has been with us before its time.

He told us that over time the demand and growth for cloud computing would be further and further developed. However I found this subject uninteresting,

I couldn’t really relate much to it as he used much jargon. Yet, he stated that little services are performed through the cloud at the moment and people have little trust in it right now. We feel it is still risky not proven itself enough, however private cloud specialists are overcoming these issues.

Thirdly Claire Dillon from Microsoft asked the audience how many devices are connected in your home? I counted we had 14 yet I may have still missed some! This great genious is thanks to modern the computing and the way we live today. I found her contribution most appealing as she talked about the changes as we a society face on a day-to-day basis.

Computing is now widespread thing we all understand that. However it is in the context that we the consumers must be able to comprehend, that data can be used for working and experiences are now becoming highly engaging and entertaining with the use of the cloud. In reality the cloud is everywhere to that, A vision of the future?

The speed at which people come up with the idea is so rapid. It is claimed cloud will grow four times faster than technology ever did. However there are many drawbacks, yet firms are working on these issues to drive the future of cloud computing.

This was an enjoyable talk Claire included much media, finishing up by saying

“The best way to predict the future is to invent it” – Alan Kay

Fergus Gloster – MD Marketo International brought salesforce.com to IrelandWorking in Marketing automation software. He has been involved with the cloud since 2000.The current sales and marketing model has become obsolete at worst its totally dysfunctional.

The way the buyer’s process has transformed, now there is info abundance.Marketing has a much greater role to build demand and be accountable for those affectedData bases which are designed to enable a firm to see the process of a potential buyer i.e. tracking or social engagement

All in all, dice has been an incredible experience. However it is true to say that from time to time I found it difficult to comprehend the subject. This module has however opened my eyes. I know understand slightly better how modern technology is becoming an increasing role as part of our daily routine and we must go with it. The module enabled me to acquire the new skills such as of creating an app or even formatting a poster. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience nonetheless some conferences were more appealing to others.

Get Started 2013

This conference was mostly based on how to become an entrepreneur. Social Entrepreneur’s Ireland was a key player in the days talk. I was able to receive good advice from the array of talkers that presented themselves on the Helix’s stage. All spoke in an upbeat, creative and passionate manner. However the downside was the consulting panel, every so often I found it extremely difficult to engage with what they were they were talking. In so, sometimes the conference can seem long-winded as I question repeatedly as a student how does some of these talks relate to me and enhance my learning? Well I’ll leave you with that to ponder on…

First up was Michael Kelly, he created GIY– Grow your own. He gave a good delivery of speech and also raised questions and interacted with the audience. This I found highly intriguing and appealing. He based his company on growing and employing local, which most definitely is essential in Ireland today! GIY also provides many learning processes whereby the community can co-operate and learn from one another- in growing their own produce. When I say produce it literally seems to be everything from tomatoes to tea.

Without a doubt, Michael took a chance. He now employs up to 6 members of staff in his firm. GIY is an on going success considering in 2012 Ireland exported 9 billion in produce. We are a mixed and open economy that has and is greatly benefiting from the EU. Therefore, I understood ultimately Michael’s desire to sell an idea and make it successful!

Camara which is a charity in Ireland his responsible for transforming the lives of children in disadvantaged areas of the world, and teach them the necessary skills so that they will come digitally literate. Camara is inspiring as they hope to boost the opportunites for the lives of innocent children and teach them skills that will most certainly transform their lives and enable them to break out of the poverty cycle.

Currently Camara are operating in Ireland, US, Caribbean and Africa to name but a few.

  • Provided eLearning Centre’s to over 1,650 schools in Africa, Ireland and the Caribbean
  • Installed nearly 35,000 computers, and,
  • Trained over 5,000 teachers how to use the technology for learning purposes.

They hope to educate up to 1.25 million children in a 3-year effective impact plan.

I have forgotten to mention, similar to GIY Camara acts as a social enterprise. Their main objectives are to operating under strong business principles, generating its own revenues but with the sole purpose of effecting social change – the enhancement of education in disadvantaged schools. Camara are becoming more known globally and I wish them every success in the future.

Hireland.ie spoken by the founder Lucy Masterson was basically set up to encourage Ireland to get back to work. It began as a marketing campaign to raise awareness. It also implies that often the message is simple “ Yes we can”.

I was intrigued in so I went on to the website. What striked me the most was the fact that Hireland is bold, is daring and the language used by both Lucy and the website was fresh, positive and concise. The website is very enticing,

Their objectives are impacting and possible.

“Join- the movement that’s sparking the nation into thinking differently about the benefits of creating jobs, overcutting them and play your part in 2013 by pledging to Hire 1!

To date 6000 jobs have been created through hireland, which is an outstanding achievement

“Don’t be rash be bold”

I fully enjoyed Get start Conference; with me I’ll take away some key advice that has changed my perception of how I see the world.

  1.    Be passionate, ethical and motivated
  2.     Don’t die with the music still in you
  3.    If you don’t ask you won’t get
  4. Yes we can

#GetMobile12

On December 4th, I sat and watched presentations and panel discussions in the Helix. This was to be our last talk for 2012. Topics discussed ranged between app development from Jampot (theAppBuilder) to mobile payment solutions from PayPal.Each guest speaker had a different scope into where they thought mobile could go next. Depite this they often used jargon, which students had no concept of. In so, I flet sometimes that it was difficult to connect with the speakers has their speeches sometimes had little or no significance to us as studemts. In all, it was a very enjoyable seminar !

Theo made the introduction to the the seminar, he informed other guests how all students had to create their own blog !

« 10 or 15 years ago you needed to be a nuclear scientist to write a blog. Now everyone does it »

« Mobile as a term is just a reference to an Eco-System that phones are part of » -Kevin Slavin

What I didn’t know was and I found it very interesting wasnthat DCU is the national centre for Sensor Research as well as Cloud computing !

Theo flashed images of the Mercedes in cloud car on screen, this car looked impeccable ! All information the car received would be backed up via iCloud !Snazzy !

Next  we heard from …..

Dominic Mulddon spoke how important mobile was to him and in his opinion everything started because of Alexander Graham Bell !

Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.

Alexander Graham Bell

Just recently SMS for those of you that don’t know turned 20!! Yeah it doesn’t seem that old but in mobile terms it actually is!

“If the Internet was a wave, mobile is a tsunami”.

Dominic explained how important Púca believes to portray a retailer’s perspective of the brand! To get other people’s attention you need to integrate with other media such as Face book etc.

They carried this out successfully with Bulmers.

They created apps, placed price scanning on cans and bottles to make it more mobile user friendly. Sent SMS and spot prizes to loyal customers.

The most important thing, Púca claimed was to have rewards or incentives for customers to buy!

I thoroughly enjoyed the next speaker Eoin Cruise of Nokia partly becuase he showed us the new nokia Lumia which will launch in March and finally compete with the iPhone !

Eoin stated that « Innovation is everything “

I want this phone so bad, I have an iphone already although this phone can do taskes that no other device has completed previous.Google maps is synced,Windows 8, wireless charger oad, nterchangeable covers…..you name it thus Nokia Lumia 920 has it. I n march this phone could most defintely take the world by storm !

I love taking photos, so the camera technoclgy being of such a high spec appeals to be greatky. I have a canon slr and apparently this phone has picture quality equivalent to that ! Plus it automaticlaly manages the shutter so no blurry images ! Fantastic, need I say more ?!

Then Windows 8 came along. You can know put a personal touch to your computer ? Nice !! You are able to pin contact details of your closest friends  from any social network to your homescreen ! All information is simply located on your home page ! Amazing personalised experience !

Next Louise Phelan VP of PayPal said she wanted to make DCU  a cashless campus ? First of it’s kind ! That would be cool and andy right ?

Louise discuused that mobile is changing rapidly how we weshop ! This is why PayPal launched their Mobile App in the Us !

20% mCommerce in US

By 2016, she believes 44% of all sales will be influenced by the web ! That is most certainly the case with me as I shop online for the majority of my purchases !!

Here’s another fact, 60% that visit the store buy online !

PayPal want to create « wallet in the cloud » Soon I really think that this could be possible !
